Justice for all

Last week our nation lost Mildred Loving, a woman who was arrested, convicted and banished from her home state of Virginia. Mildred’s only crime was marrying the one man she ever loved. It was the marriage of Ms. Loving, a black woman, to her husband Richard, a white man, which led to the US Supreme Court decision that ended bans on interracial marriages nationwide in 1967.

Today the California Supreme Court also upheld our republic's highest ideals by granting marriage rights to all loving couples regardless of gender. It's times like these when I feel quite proud to be a Californian and part of the fight for equal justice and equal opportunity for all. Tonight, our family celebrated this historic moment in downtown Sacramento as we joined thousands standing on the right side of history.

Yesterday was a good day; today was a great day!
