SACRAMENTO -- Rep. Tom Lantos' decision not to seek re-election could trigger a Democratic primary fight between two veteran California politicians in one of the few wide-open congressional races in the state this year.
Former state Sen. Jackie Speier, of Hillsborough, had already formed an exploratory committee to consider challenging Lantos in the June primary when the congressman said Wednesday that he had cancer of the esophagus and would not seek a 15th term.
After Lantos' announcement, Speier's successor in the Senate, Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, issued a statement saying he would take a "hard look" at running for the seat.
"Sen. Yee's thoughts today are with U.S. Rep. Lantos," spokesman Adam Keigwin said Thursday. "In the coming days, he will talk with community members and decide whether or not to run for Congress."
